Atlanta P.D. Orders 400 Tasers For Officers

Police Officers Train With Tasers

The Atlanta Police Department is buying 400 Tasers so more officers can be armed with a non-lethal weapon, one most law enforcement agencies already use.

Tasers and other electronic stun devices can incapacitate criminals either by touching them directly with the device or shooting probes from a distance of 20 feet or more. Until recently in Atlanta, only SWAT officers have been issued Tasers.

The price tag of the 400 Tasers is estimated to be about $800,000. Although there won’t be enough Tasers to outfit each of the 1,900 Atlanta Police Department officers, officers in the highest crime ridden areas will receive priority.

Taser X26 Law Enforcement Model

The Tasers are expected to arrive sometime this fall and each officer will receive training on use-of-force law, APD policies, as well as extensive training on the Tasers.

Tasers and stun guns
work by delivering a temporary, debilitating shock and a are an excellent non-lethal means of subduing armed criminals or suspects who are fighting, resist arrest, or are under the influence of drugs.

Studies have repeatedly shown that the use of Tasers has led to reduced injuries of officers and civilians.

Police spokesman, Carlos Campos said the department decided to use Tasers because they could be “safe and viable alternatives to deadly force … We believe this is a safe and effective alternative tool.”

Pepper Spray – How To Choose The Right One

Habanero Peppers

We’ve blogged about how pepper spray and other self defense weapons have been used against an attacker and how effective it can be as self defense tool. However one of the things that we haven’t mentioned, but just as important, is how to choose the right one.

Pepper Spray comes in many different sizes, shapes, strengths and dispersal patterns so, picking one can be a bit confusing. So, lets break down the various types of defensive sprays based on three characteristics;

  1. Chemical Composition
  2. Formulation
  3. Delivery Method

CHEMICAL COMPOSITION

There are three types of defensive sprays on the market today. OC is the only one refered to as “Pepper Spray” because it’s actually made from hot chile peppers. CS and CN are considered “Tear Gas” and are made from chemicals.

  1. CS (Orthochlorobenzalmalonitrile)
  2. CN (alphachloroacetaphenone)
  3. OC (Oleoresin Capsicum)

Police use Tear Gas for riot control, but it’s also available for civilian use

CS and CN (commonly called tear gas) are chemical irritants that affect the membrane tissues. Tear gas works by irritating mucous membranes in the eyes, nose, mouth and lungs, and causes crying, sneezing, coughing, difficulty breathing, pain in the eyes, temporary blindness.

It will also burn the skin where sweaty and or sunburned. In highly concentrated doses it can also induce severe coughing and vomiting. Almost all of the immediate effects wear off within an hour, although the feeling of burning and highly irritated skin may persist for hours.

Also, both CS and CN are man-made chemicals that are carcinogens and may lead to long-term health problems.

OC Pepper Spray

OC (Oleoresin Capsicum) generally referred to as Pepper Spray, is the most common and effective defensive spray. OC is an inflammatory agent, unlike CS and CN which are irritants. OC is not a man-made chemical, it is created from a variety of hot pepper plants and as a result, is natural, non-toxic and causes no permanent damage. OC begins working immediately, and typically takes about thirty to forty minutes for its effects to subside.

OC dilates the eye capillaries, which causes temporary blindness. Next, it enters the throat and inflames breathing tissue, resulting in severe coughing. Therefore, its effective on people under the influence of drugs who might not feel pain. The attacker is still able to breathe, so OC isn’t life threatening, but is extremely debilitating and uncomfortable.

Scoville Heat Chart

FORMULATION – SHU’S

Pepper Sprays come in a range of concentrations from 1% to 18%. Most people believe that 18% is the best because it’s made up of the highest concentration of OC. However, the best method to determine a pepper spray’s effectiveness is to find out the heat rating. The heat rating of OC pepper spray is measured in Scoville Heat Units (SHU’s). The SHU for a standard bell pepper is 0, while Habanero peppers are approximately 200,000 to 300,000. Many OC Pepper Sprays have an SHU of between 1,000,00 to 3,000,000. So, purchasing OC pepper spray with a concentration of 18% is fine, but the most important thing to consider is the heat rating. Pepper Spray with a higher heat rating will incapacitate an attacker and make him more uncomfortable than a pepper spray with a lower heat rating.

DELIVERY METHOD

The next thing to consider is the delivery method. This is just as significant as the formulation in determining which Pepper Spray is right for you. Each delivery method has its own unique advantages and disadvantages. The delivery methods are; the stream, fogger, foam, gel and combination.

Stream

Stream

The stream works in a way similar to a high pressure garden hose nozzle. A large amount of spray being forced through a small opening in a short amount of time.

Advantages
The stream has the largest range, up to 20 feet, so you will be able to keep a safe distance between you and the attacker. It’s made up of heavy droplets so it’s not likely to be affected by strong winds and won’t blow back into your direction. The stream can be shot directly into an attackers face, making it particularly effective. The stream is the only model available in the popular key-chain version that many women like.

Disadvantages
Although the stream has the best range, the user must be precise in their aim, which could prove to be difficult under the stress of the circumstances. If an attacker is within close range, it may be tough to get an accurate shot to the face. The stream doesn’t last as long as some of the other models. Shooting a large amount of spray means you will empty your canister quickly. The stream doesn’t create a mist-like barrier so a direct hit to the face is required for it to be effective.

Fogger

Fogger

The fogger, as its name implies, creates a fog-like spray pattern. It is made up of much finer droplets than the stream, so it lingers in the air much longer.

Advantages
Foggers are under high pressure, so the range is nearly equivalent to the stream, about 15 feet. The fogger also creates a mist-like barrier, that hovers in the air for several minutes, which makes it effective against multiple assailants. The fogger is especially effective indoors. Spraying the fogger in a doorway or hallway will make it nearly impenetrable. This is ideal if you need to hold an off attacker for a few minutes to give yourself time to escape through a window or another door.

Disadvantages
Because Foggers are under high pressure and they discharge a large amount of spray, you’ll empty your canister pretty quickly. Foggers could be affected by heavy winds and blow back in the users direction. Not available in the key-chain model.

Foam

Pepper Foam

The pepper foam looks like a foam-type shaving cream and can cover an attacker’s entire face, making it difficult to see.

Advantages
The pepper foam sticks to the face and any attempt to wipe it off will cause deeper penetration into the skin. It includes a UV dye that marks the attacker for law enforcement to identify him. The range is good at 8 to 10 feet.

Disadvantages
It doesn’t create a barrier like the cone mist or the fogger. The user must aim accurately to achieve a direct hit to the face. Not available in the key-chain model.

Pepper Gel

Pepper Gel

The pepper gel is a glue-like substance that reacts similar to the pepper foam and sticks to an attacker’s skin.

Advantages
The pepper gel sticks to the face like glue. Like the Pepper Foam it marks the attacker’s face for law enforcement to identity easily. The pepper gel has an excellent 18 foot range. Any attempt to wipe it off, causes further penetration into the skin.

Disadvantages
It doesn’t create a barrier like the cone mist or fogger. The user must aim accurately to achieve a direct hit to the face. Not available in the key-chain model.

Combination Spray

Mace Combo Spray

A combo spray combines the the effects of OC Pepper Spray, CN Tear Gas, and UV dye to create a triple threat to an attacker.

Advantages
The OC causes the eyes to burn and induces an uncontrollable coughing attack. The CN causes intense burning and disorientation. The UV dye marks the attackers face for law enforcement. The combo comes in a stream and fogger model.

Disadvantages
Because it contains CN gas, it does have chemicals in it that can cause long term health risks. Not a big problem for you, just your attacker, unless you accidentally spray it on yourself or the wind blows it back in your face. Also, it’s not available in the smaller key-chain model that many women prefer.

There really is no right or wrong defensive spray, it’s really just a matter of preference. Do you want something with a longer range, or would you rather have a spray that doesn’t require perfect aim? Do you want a smaller key-chain model or a larger one to keep in your purse? These are questions that only you can answer, but hopefully you now know enough about the various options that your decision will be eaiser.

So now that you have a better idea of what type of defensive spray to buy, it’s also important to learn how to use it. It’s not as simple as point and shoot. Many women purchase pepper spray without being properly trained on how to use it.

So next time we’ll discuss techniques on how to shoot your pepper spray to maximize your chances off success.

UK Man Jailed For ………… Pepper Spray Possesion?

Another day, another story about a British citizen jailed for possessing self defense weapons. Our cousins across the pond really seem to take a dim view of law abiding citizens trying to protect themselves from crime and thugs.

Illegal, deadly weapons punishable by jail and fines.

A man who purchased pepper spray and paint ball pellets over the internet appeared at St Albans Crown Court last week pleading guilty to possessing a prohibited weapon.

Nicholas Erith, 54, from Watford, bought paint ball pellets, BB guns and pepper spray canisters over the internet for protection after last summer’s riots.

The prosecutor, David Chrimes, said in December of last year Erith, ordered pepper spray and paint ball pellets from the USA over the internet.

On January 3, of this year, the order was intercepted by the UK Border Agency. The following day his home was raided and searched. Carl Woolf, defending, said his client had bought the items in the wake of last year’s riots, which had taken place in August, but they had never left his property.

The charge Erith admitted in court was having in “his possession weapons designed or adapted for the discharge of any noxious liquid, gas or other thing.”

Just some misunderstood Brits having some innocent fun.

Judge Martin Griffith sentenced Erith to 16 weeks in jail suspended for 12 months. He was also ordered to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work and pay £520 towards the prosecution’s costs.

It’s amazing how hard the Brits come down on some poor fella who wants some minimal measure of self protection and piece of mind, but treat the criminals with kid gloves.

Remember last years riots in not-so-Great Britain?

The police basically let the criminals run wild and victimize the public while they did nothing but wait for the rioters to run out of steam before making arrests. With laws against possessing self defense weapons and the cops looking the other way, the public was defenseless against these scum bags.

It’s too bad, the laws intended to reduce crime actually encourage criminals because they know that citizens are unarmed and defenseless.

Stupid Chip Criminals

We love stupid criminals. We also love potato chips. So what could be better than combining the two? Enjoy!

Cheetos Assault

Take a Cheetos break

Tennessee – We’re not exactly sure what happened, or even if the event in question occurred at a trailer park. But the police report indicated a domestic dispute between James Earl Taylor, 40, and Mary Childers, after an argument over the reality show “Redneck island” evolved into a physical assault.
The physical altercation apparently involved Orange Cheese Puffs, that fact is not in dispute. However, it’s unclear whether the improvised weapon in question was Crunchy Cheetos, Cheetos Puffs or the Flamin’ Hot Variety.

Frito Lay?

Chips For Sex
Oklahoma – Lahoma Sue Smith of Oklahoma pleaded guilty to a prostitution charge for accepting a box of Frito-Lay chips in exchange for oral sex. According to an Oklahoma City Police Department report, Faron Ray Johnson told cops that he informed Smith that he did not have any money, but that she ‘agreed to give him sex for a box of chips.’ Johnson, a Frito-Lay employee, provided Smith with a case of chips he valued at $30.

I’d do just about anything for a bag of Sweet Maui Onion, but this is ridiculous.

Chips and Dip
WASHINGTON, Pa. — Police followed a trail of potato chips to catch a Pennsylvania burglary suspect.

Nobody can steal just one!

Washington police say 21-year-old Benjamin Sickles was arrested after he broke into a Subway restaurant and stole several bags of snacks. Not simply content to take his new found booty home to snack on later, he ate while he walked, leaving a trail of chips as he went.

Cops say the mental giant broke a glass door before trying to unsuccessfully open the cash register. He then made off with nine bags of chips after he couldn’t get to the cash.

Officers followed a trail of chip bags to Sickles residence. He was hold up in the house, so cops lured him out with sour cream and onion dip. He had a bloody hand and foot when he was taken into custody after police drew their Tasers.

Oh Canada
Saanich, B.C. – A couple of drunk university students stole Zellers brand BBQ – flavored chips out of a woman’s garage in Saanich, B.C.

We Always Get Our Chip Thief

The female students were drinking and heading to the University of Victoria when they passed an open garage and noticed the chips inside. The owner, who was alerted to their presence by her barking Chihuahua, heard the chip bandits and called the police.

According to police, the chip thieves motivation was the fact that Zellers is closing it’s doors for good in October and these chips are particularly good.

“I haven’t tried these for myself, but my understanding is that particular brand of barbeque is quite tasty,” said Sgt. Dean Jantzen of the Saanich Police as he tried to keep a straight face. “Apparently there had been some elicit chip tasting.”

Jantzen couldn’t keep his laughter suppressed any longer and after one question laughed saying, “These are first time chip offenders.”

You can’t make this stuff up.

Darth Vader Uses Pepper Spray To Rob A Store

These Are Not The Droids You’re Looking For!

Vader geek

Butte, Montana – Just after 4 a.m. on Monday, a man dressed in a Darth Vader mask and a black hoodie entered the Butte Thriftway on Continental Drive and threatened the clerk with pepper spray.

It is unknown whether or not the man was actually armed with pepper spray or a light sabre but the clerk reportedly gave the man an unknown amount of cash.

The man, dressed as Darth Vader, ran south from the store.

The man is described as a white male, between 5 feet 6 inches and 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing between 180 and 200 pounds and a heavy breather.

Authorities have no suspects at this time but will use surveillance from the store to help the investigation.

Give ’em a Mace shower!

As police in Riot gear all across the country start to clean up the stench that is Occupy Wall Street/Occupy Main Street/Occupy who knows what, the usual degenerates are starting to complain that the police are overstepping their bounds. The usual cries of police brutality however, are falling on deaf ears. Authorities in nearly every city have given the protestors common courtesies that even taxpayers aren’t privy to. They have been bent over backward to accommodate these leeches.

Now, after months of rapes, muggings, drug use, stabbings, shootings, defecating on police cars, littering, and general uncleanliness, the public has had enough. Municipalities have been under pressure to evict these miscreants and reclaim public land.

Along with the evictions came repeated warnings and deadline after missed deadline to vacate the premises. Yet after the ninth or tenth warning and deadline change, police started to move in.

All of this brings me to my point; The UC Davis protesters. Apparently there were complaints of police brutality, and over reactions. However, an interesting You Tube video shows that the police gave repeated warnings that they were going to clear the area. When I say repeated, I mean several, not just one or two. And when police finally converged on the protestors, they did so at a snails pace, allowing the protestors ample time to leave without any consequences, avoiding a potential mace bath.

The protestors were shown on TV from coast to coast with hands locked while police used mace on then to force them to disperse. The video shows how patient the officers were and how many chances the protestors were given.

These protestors have a right to free speech and to petition their government with their grievances. However, this is not what they were doing. The point of their protests was to provoke the police. When the police didn’t respond violently, the protestors simply “invented” a new reality and complained of police brutality anyway. Their enablers in the media gave their claims credibility.

These people are the dregs of our society and probably deserved the mace shower. At least it was a shower, something they probably hadn’t had in some time. We as a society shouldn’t tolerate this type of behavior. These people aren’t victims when they incite police, then act surprised when the police respond. The Occupy Whatever crowd are a bunch of lazy, dirty, socialist leeches who refuse to do anything other than try to take the fruits of other people’s labor. They deserve nothing more than a mouth full of mace!
