Good Samaritan Gives Away Free Pepper Spray In India

Pepper Spray

Pepper Spray

Hyderabad, India – A good Samaritan named Raman Garimella has been giving away free pepper spray canisters to women in Hyderabad in an effort to help women protect themselves against the recent rash of crimes against women.

Garimella doesn’t think the best answer to women’s self defense issues is participating in candlelight vigils, holding hands singing kumbaya or even waiting around for the police. Instead he believes that women should take an active role in their own self defense, by arming themselves with pepper spray.

He believes this approach will also change the way men think about women. He wants to empower women, while simultaneously making some men think twice before trying to target a defenseless woman. So, he has decided to supply free pepper spray to all who request it.

His Facebook page says, “Pervs aren’t going to stop as long as consequences are not scary enough. What does scare men is the idea of being pepper sprayed their heads off. Ladies, if you are in Hyderabad and need it, message me for a free bottle of pepper spray and a whistle.”

Recently he has been contacted by more women than he can count. “I used to give pepper spray to my sister and friends but after the Delhi incident, I decided to give away these cans to women who needed them. I think that every woman should carry one. They are not heavy and it can ward off a man for at least 20 minutes. I was surprised to see the impact the status created after I put that up on Facebook. I got many calls from girls who wanted these sprays. And some of my male friends too got pepper sprays for their sisters and relatives as New Year gifts,” he said.

He says he doesn’t want to start a campaign or a movement but simply wants to do his part to help society and hopefully offer some piece of mind and self protection for women.

“I am not here to give advice to men or women. I just want to do my bit so that if caught in such a situation, women can stand up for themselves and protect their lives rather than depending on someone else,” he said.

How Stun Guns Work

The Runt Rechargeable Stun Gun

The Runt Rechargeable Stun Gun

A stun gun is a self defense device that discharges electricity, disrupting the human body’s natural electrical signals. Most stun guns have between two to four metal contacts that, when touched against someone, will immediately send an electrical charge into the body. The ensuing electrical charge affects the central nervous system and will incapacitate even the largest of men. But how does it work and how much damage can it cause? To answer those questions it’s important to review basic concept of electricity and how it affects the human body.

ELECTRICITY BASICS

A common misconception among many people is that the shock from a stun gun can cause serious injury or death. While it’s true that exposure to electricity can lead to serious organ damage and death, this is not true of stun guns. If an electrical charge is high in amps it can lead to death, but high voltage will do nothing more than cause pain. Think of voltage as pressure or intensity and amperage as speed. The human body can take a lot of electrical “pressure” (voltage) at a low current or “speed” (amperage). The higher the speed, the more likely that severe damage will occur. Most stun guns can emit a charge of up to several million volts, but less than 10 milliamps. So a stun gun sends an electrical charge at a great intensity into the human body but does so at a very low rate of speed.

The following table gives examples of amperage and the effect on the human body;

  • 1 milliamp – Tingling Sensation in the muscles.
  • 3 – 5 milliamps – Muscle contractions, moderate pain, loss of balance and disorientation, some voluntary muscle control is still maintained.
  • 6 – 15 milliamps – Painful, complete loss of muscle control.
  • 100 – 200 milliamps – Extreme pain, Ventricular fibrillation (uneven, uncoordinated pumping of the heart.) Muscular contraction and nerve damage begins to occur. Death is likely.

THE MYTH OF STUN GUN DEATHS

Tasers (a brand of stun gun) used by police have been wrongly blamed for some high profile deaths in recent years. However, subsequent investigations have shown that the deaths were mainly caused by outside influences and not the stun gun itself. Most of the individuals who died after contact with a stun gun were under the influence of mind-altering drugs like cocaine. According to research, the presence of cocaine in the bloodstream increases the “shock” from a stun gun by 50 to 100 percent.

Source: Ten researchers led by Dr D Lakkireddy from the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio, and reported in the August 2006 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

So, it isn’t actually the stun gun, but the presence of “illegal” drugs that was the catalyst. Without the presence of drugs in their system, they would have experienced a mild shock. The charge generated from a stun gun alone cannot cause death. Two to five milliamps simply isn’t enough amperage to cause death to a human being. However, when that amperage is increased by outside influences, the stun gun, or the user can’t be blamed.

HOW A STUN GUN DISRUPTS ELECTRICAL SIGNALS IN THE BODY

Stun Flashlight

Stun Flashlight

Electricity is present in the human body, without it we wouldn’t be able to perform simple tasks. The brain sends an electrical signal to nerve cells which then sends it to muscles telling them to expand or contract, to perform a particular function like walking or picking up an object. The muscle then sends a message back to the brain telling it what an object feels or tastes like. All of these messages travel through the central nervous system.

A stun gun works by disrupting this communication between the brain and nerve cells. The muscles are confused by this disruption and the ensuing electrical shock tells them to contract and expand rapidly. This rapid movement and resulting stress on the muscles depletes the blood sugar and converts it to lactic acid. In layman’s terms, the muscles are forced to do a massive amount of work in a short time and are too exhausted to perform even the most basic functions, like standing up. This leads to a loss of balance and disorientation which will typically last thirty to forty minutes, and there is no permanent effect on the human body.

The effects of a stun gun will vary based on many factors; the type or model, how many seconds it touches an attacker, the size and weight of the attacker, and the physiological makeup of the individual. However, as a general guideline the following is usually true;

  • One second of contact will exact some pain and cause muscles to contract.
  • Two seconds of contact will lead to moderate pain, muscle spasms and some loss of balance.
  • Three seconds of contact will cause intense pain, confusion, disorientation and lead to a complete loss of balance.

Stun guns are a great self defense option, especially for women. They disrupt the natural electrical signals traveling through the central nervous system causing disorientation and a lack of balance. They pack a powerful punch but leave no lasting damage. For people who are uncomfortable carrying a lethal weapon like a fire arm, a great non-lethal solution is a stun gun.

Knuckle Blaster Stun Gun

950,000 Volts Of Stopping Power

950,000 Volts Of Stopping Power

Brass knuckles are designed to fit comfortably in the users hand and concentrate the force of a punch, by directing it toward a harder and smaller contact area. The predictable result is tissue disruption, including the likelihood of fracturing the victim’s bones.

Stun guns are designed to stop an attacker by sending electricity into an attacker’s body, affecting the central nervous system and incapacitating him.

Brass knuckles are illegal in most states but stun guns, on the other hand, are legal in most of the U.S. So what would happen if the easy grip of brass knuckles were combined with the “legal” stopping power of a 950,000 volt stun gun?

That’s how the Knuckle Blaster was born! This uniquely-designed stun gun is meant to provide you with a legal self defense option that is extremely difficult for an attacker to take from you. It’s shaped like a pair of deadly brass knuckles, however it’s coated by a soft, rubber material resulting in firm comfortable grip.

The Knuckle Blaster

The Knuckle Blaster

The Knuckle Blaster Stun Gun will send almost a million volts through the body of an attacker. A second of contact will instantly repel the scum bag, while two or more seconds will drop him to his knees.

Just touch your attacker to instantly repel them and give you time to get away. Longer contact will cause further disorientation and after a few seconds will turn his legs into jelly and drop him to his knees.

This patented device has a soft rubber skin and is sized to accommodate all hand sizes.

A safety switch is built in and accessible to your thumb. Once you grab the Knuckle Blaster stun gun you can flip off the safety and fire with the same hand. No need to use two hands.

8 Safety Tips For Women

Don't Become A Victim

Don’t Become A Victim

Most people mistakenly believe street crimes such as assault, robbery, homicide, rape and carjackings are common only in big cities with bad neighborhoods. It’s also a common misconception that these types of crimes only occur at night, under cover of darkness. However, crime statistics indicate otherwise. While it’s true that street crimes tend to occur more frequently in larger metropolitan areas, the suburbs and “nice” neighborhoods are not immune to crime, even during the day.

Women who are alone are at risk of becoming a victim at all hours of the day and in any type of neighborhood or city.

So, here are some quick tips for women on how to reduce your odds of becoming the victim of a street crime, no matter where you are.

Be Alert Of Your Surroundings

Be Alert Of Your Surroundings

1) – Be Aware Of Your Surroundings.

You should always be alert and observant to what is going on around you. That includes suspicious looking people and vehicles. Avoid poorly lit areas, or places where someone could hide and surprise you. People who talk on their cell phones are often oblivious to their surroundings and make great targets for criminals. Don’t be that person.

2) – Don’t Go Out Alone

Avoid going out alone at night, especially in unfamiliar areas. There is safety in numbers. Criminals target women who are alone far more often that women in pairs or groups. However, just because you are traveling with a friend, doesn’t mean you can let your guard down. You still need to be cognizant of your surroundings and the people around you.

Avoid ATM's At Night

Avoid ATM’s At Night

3) – Avoid ATM’s At Night

Use common sense when using an ATM. Most ATM crimes occur after 8:00 pm. Plan things out ahead of time and use the ATM during day-time hours. If that isn’t a possibility then go to a supermarket. Many supermarkets have a mini bank branch inside, so use the ATM inside the market. If they don’t have a mini bank branch, consider buying a small item from the market and getting cash back. Never use a Bank ATM machine at night.

4) – Self Defense Weapons

Make sure you have some type of self defense item such as; pepper spray, a stun guns or even a kubotan. Whichever you choose, make sure you know how to use it and practice with it so you’ll be prepared when you need it.

5) – Learn How To Use A Gun

Learn about and familiarize yourself with hand guns. Even if you don’t own one or plan to own one, you may find yourself in a position to use one. An attacker may drop his weapon, or somebody being attacked may drop theirs and you could suddenly find yourself in a position to protect yourself or someone else. If you’ve never fired a weapon before you’ll be in trouble. However, if you’ve had some training or even some minimal exposure to handguns, that knowledge could prepare you to use that handgun for self defense and save your life in the process.

Take A Self Defense Class

Take A Self Defense Class

6) – Take A Self Defense Class

Sometimes carrying pepper spray gives women a false sense of security. The pepper spray could fail to discharge, you might drop it or it could be taken away. Have a back-up plan in place by taking a self-defense course. Learning how to throw a punch, or a kick will give you confidence. Often times that confidence shows in your body language and an attacker will simply choose another target. Or in the event that you do become a victim, you just might be able to use what you learn to save your life.

7) – Enable Cell Phone GPS

Keep your cell phone with you at all times and learn it’s capabilities. Does your cell phone have GPS tracking capability? If something happens to you and your cell phone has GPS tracking it may aid law enforcement in locating you. Also, make sure your phone has a full charge every time you leave the house.

8) – Let People Know Your Plans

Always let someone, a neighbor, roommate, or family member know your itinerary before you leave. If you go missing, this could make it much easier for the police to locate you later on.

How To Shoot Pepper Spray

Police Issue Pepper Spray

Police Issue Pepper Spray

In the last 10 years, pepper spray has increased in popularity as a means of self protection for women around the world. However, pepper spray education and instruction in how to use it, have not kept pace with the overall rise in sales.

The results have been predictable, record numbers of women who own pepper spray but have no practical knowledge of when to deploy it or how to use it properly.

There have been reports of accidental discharges, misfires, women spraying themselves while attempting to fight off an attacker and perps taking taking the pepper spray away and using it against their victims.

Pepper spray makes a great choice for self defense; it’s non-lethal, inexpensive, easy to use, small, inconspicuous and extremely effective when used properly. So the important thing is to learn how to use it and practice with a water-based practice spray to become proficient in how to deploy it correctly.

The following tips will help you to use pepper spray the proper way so that you’ll avoid accidental discharge and insure that you hit your intended target while minimizing the risk to yourself.

BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS

Be Aware Of Your Surroundings

Be Aware Of Your Surroundings

Having a canister of pepper spray on your key-chain, in your purse or in your car will not help you one bit if you allow an attacker to surprise you. You need to know what’s going on around you at all times and have your pepper spray in hand and ready to use while you are walking to and from your vehicle.

Pay attention to your surroundings and be ready, you may only have a second or two to react.

React Quickly And Confidently

React Quickly And Confidently

REACT QUICKLY AND WITH CONFIDENCE

Remember, the objective is to surprise the attacker. Pull out your pepper spray only when you are prepared to use it. Don’t give the attacker any time to think and react to it.

When you’re ready to shoot, go into a slight crouch with your feet about shoulder width apart and evenly balanced.

Hold your non-shooting hand out and yell stop as you shoot. This will focus your energy on the task at hand and may draw the attacker’s attention toward your hand and away from the pepper spray. It also gives you time to raise and aim the spray before you shoot.

NOTE: Some women may not want to use one hand because they may not be able to aim accurately unless they hold the spray with both hands. Either way, determine which method works best for you by practicing first.

Hold your shooting hand steady as you shoot, never thrust your hand forward as it will affect your aim. Make sure that your upper body remains balanced and still. This will allow you to aim more accurately and with consistency.

As you fire, step backward slightly, but don’t turn your back on him! This will give you more time, create more distance between you and the attacker and draws the attacker into the spray. While stepping back, do so in a slow, steady and deliberate manner while trying to limit upper body movement as much as possible.

Don’t shut your eyes while spraying. You need to see where you are shooting. If your aim is off slightly, simply adjust your aim and continue shooting.

Don’t wave the spray like a fire hose, this does nothing but waste the spray. Aim, shoot and look where you are hitting and correct if necessary.

Aim for the head and shoulders. Shooting for about 2-3 seconds is usually adequate. At this point, an attacker will normally pause for a moment while he tries to gather himself as the pain and uncontrollable coughing spasms set in. Once he’s disabled, stop spraying, and escape.

Water-Based Practice Spray

Water-Based Practice Spray

PRACTICE

Shooting pepper spray accurately is like any athletic activity, it requires practice to achieve perfection. No one would dream of using martial arts to protect themselves without first practicing, so why would you do that with pepper spray?

Don’t wait until something bad happens until you first use your spray. Buy a water-based inert spray to practice with, until you are comfortable using it.

BUY SOME PEPPER SPRAY!

So now it’s time to purchase some spray. Do you want a 1/2 oz key-chain model, or a larger one to keep in your purse? Would you prefer a stream or a fogger? Which one is better, pepper gel, pepper foam or OC pepper spray?

There are many options to choose from and the best way to determine which one is right for you, is to visit our pepper spray guide.

So, educate yourself, practice and don’t depend on anyone else for protection. Take it upon yourself to provide your own protection and you’ll feel safer and more confidant. Good luck and stay safe!

Woman Uses Bear Spray And A Bokken To Catch A Thief

Bear Spray

Bear Spray

San Francisco, California – Sonya Yu, a San Francisco woman decided she’s had enough of crime in her neighborhood and took the initiative to fight back. She was angry that thieves were stealing delivered packages from the doorsteps of her neighbors so she attempted to catch the suspect herself and she posted live tweets throughout the entire ordeal.

She armed herself with bear spray (an extremely powerful pepper spray used primarily as a bear repellant) and a bokken (a wooden sword the samurai used during training).

“My bear spray, bokken, & I are still not intimidated,” wrote Yu. “We keep bear spray by the door, so my plan is spray, call 911, & mutilate his junk.”

You gotta love this woman’s style! She definitely doesn’t fit the typical helpless victim profile.

Bokken

Bokken

When the suspect approached a seemingly unattended package at Yu’s door, She doused him with bear spray from the safety of her balcony. The man, who apparently was armed with a knife, fled immediately.

Yu called police and then pursued the scum bag with her bokken and bear spray in tow.

“He escaped, but not far,” she tweeted. “The bear spray debilitated him & painted him orange so other cops picked him up within 5 minutes. GOT HIM!”

She said that the police laughed hysterically when they saw her makeshift weapons.

Yu was hit with some Bear Spray blowback, but she thought it was a small price to pay for catching the krook.

San Francisco police identified the man as Andy Anduha, 51. He was charged with attempted burglary and outstanding warrants for traffic violations, police said.

Random, Brutal Attacks Are On The Rise

A Disturbing New Trend

Awareness of your surroundings, is probably the most important factor to avoid becoming the victim of an assault, robbery or any other street crime. A person who shows awareness and confidence isn’t an easy target and therefore most criminals will simply look for another victim.

However, there has been a troubling trend in the last year taking hold in cities across America, that may negate the benefits of awareness. Brazen assaults are taking place, involving groups of young men outnumbering and overwhelming their victims. These attacks are often taking place in broad daylight in busy areas with other people and witnesses nearby. The most disturbing aspect of these attacks? They are taking place for no reason other than for fun! Often times victims are not robbed, just beaten up.

Baltimore, Maryland – A recent example of this is a story involving a man fighting for his life in a Baltimore hospital. John Mason, a 32-year-old tattoo artist, was viciously attacked in downtown Baltimore last Friday afternoon, November 2nd. He sustained some serious head injuries and doctors have put him into a medically induced coma.

The attack took place at 1:30 in the afternoon. According to a witness, there were eight attackers and they didn’t appear to know the victim.

“Twice, he kept telling them he didn’t want to fight. He didn’t want to fight,” the witness said. “They didn’t care.”

“They didn’t know him at all. They was just looking for trouble,” he said.

He says it happened at the bus stop and one of the attackers kicked Mason more than a dozen times.

“At this point, it’s unclear what the motive was. We’re looking at a variety of possibilities.” said Anthony Guglielmi, Baltimore City Police spokesperson.

Police are looking through images from the many surveillance cameras located in the downtown area. This attack comes on the heals of the beating of a tourist earlier this year that was caught on video and got national attention.

There is no amount of awareness that can protect you from something like this. It’s time for Americans to seriously consider some form of personal protection. A small handgun is obviously the best option, especially when facing multiple attackers.

However, many people are uncomfortable with carrying a gun. An excellent alternative is a fogger pepper spray. This type of spray creates a fog barrier to prevent an attacker from getting close. It also works pretty well against multiple attackers.

Women In Beirut Stock Up On Pepper Spray, Stun Guns

The Crime Ridden Streets Of Beirut

Beirut, Lebanon – For years, Beirut has had a reputation as a dangerous place. The smoldering burned out cars, neighborhoods of dilapidated buildings, streets of rubble and Muslim terrorists have really put a damper on on the tourism industry.

Take all of those negatives and throw in the fact that the prevailing culture and religion permit, and perhaps even sanction violence against women and you have a recipe for disaster.

This helps to explain why women in Beirut have taken matters into their own hands. They’ve taken it upon themselves to be responsible for their own protection. Women are buying up self defense products like pepper spray and stun guns in record numbers.

Shop owners are starting to see personal protection devices like key-chain pepper sprays, 1 million volt stun guns disguised as cell phones fly off the shelves.

The security situation is already less than sub par in the country and recently, reports of increased harassment of women has many females on edge and living in fear.

One shop owner, who prefers to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals from criminals, says that between pepper spray and stun guns he is currently selling about 30 defensive weapons for women per week; although, he adds, “it is usually guys buying them for their girlfriends or wives.”

Many women have been attacked in broad daylight and in full view of witnesses. Women who have purchased personal protection devices say they feel empowered and no longer live in constant fear when walking to the local market or running errands.

Self defense classes have also been seeing record attendance in recent months.

This story illustrates why it’s important for people, especially women, to take control of their own self defense. Even in a law-abiding country like the U.S. the Police can’t be everywhere and protect everyone. So it’s important for people to realize that they need to have a plan when confronted with a threat. That plan should include efforts at prevention like awareness and avoidance. However a good plan should also include efforts at self protection like martial arts training, pepper spray, a good handgun or some other form of protection.

Women In Kolkata, India Choose Pepper Spray For Self-Defense

Pepper Spray is popular in India

One thing Piyali Ghosh, a marketing professional, never forgets to carry these days is her trustworthy pepper spray. She is one among the thousands of working women in the city who stay out till late night and feel the need for a safety device that is handy and effective.

Following the spurt in rape cases in the city, more women are putting their faith in pepper sprays for self-defense. In the last six months, the sale of these sprays has shot up by more than four times here.

“The Cobra Pepper Spray was launched six months ago. Priced at Rs. 499, we were initially selling about 50-60 cans a month. Now, it has shot up to 200 – 300 cans,” said Anmol Arora, director of the Calcutta Chemical Corporation.

Businessman V Jain bought the spray for his 22-year-old daughter since she travels long distances regularly. “With crimes against women on the rise in the city, I bought two cans for my daughter. She keeps one in her bag and the other in her car,” he said.

Each canister weighs about 35gm and is good for 5-6 sprays. It can take down eight to 10 people at a time. Although the spray does not harm the person permanently, his eyes keep burning for a couple of hours.

Although it is called pepper powder, the main ingredient is a chemical derived from a fruit from the chilli group which causes a burning sensation. It goes way back to the 1980s when it was first used by the US postal service to scare away dogs. In India, it was introduced a few years ago.

A shop owner at Metro Plaza said, “A few months ago we used to sell five cans. Now, we easily sell 60 cans.”

“We only hear about these sprays, but they aren’t available in the stores. The spray is good to scare away criminals,” said Jadavpur University student Ankita Ghosh.

Congratulations to officials in India for allowing their citizens to protect themselves. Too bad Great Britain and Australia still prevent their citizen from carrying self defense products. Maybe after more of their citizens are victimized, the politicians will see the error of their ways…..but we’re not holding our breath!

87-year-old woman foils attempted robbery in NC

Glock 17 9mm – The weapon of choice for Grandmas everywhere

Hendersonville, North Carolina — Notice to burglars, be careful who you mess with when you break into a home. An 87-year-old woman packing heat is not someone to be taken lightly. Henderson County Sheriff Charles McDonald said that two men were arrested and now face first-degree burglary charges for breaking into a home while the resident was there.

They came in through a window, looking for goodies and instead woke the 87 year-old woman and got a close up view of her 9mm Glock. She never even had a chance to fire a shot, the two cowards promptly soiled themselves and scattered like roaches.

The men are also suspected in several other break-ins in the area. According to the Sheriff, both men were armed at the time of the attempted robbery. Just another example of a citizen using a self defense weapon to fight off a bad guy. The cops do a great job, but they can’t be everywhere, so we shouldn’t count on them for personal protection . Individuals should take responsibility for their own safety.
